With the end of the semester rapidly approaching, the EMS program just held its Mass Casualty Incident training scenario. This year’s scenario? A tornado hit the MEC during an outside function in the courtyard. There were approximately 40 patients and 30 EMS responders, with various MEC staff participating in supporting roles, shadow positions (making sure students don’t do anything too crazy) and as evaluators.
This exercise is an all day event beginning with a lecture during what would normally be our Professional Development class. During that time we are given a brief over view of roles and responsibilities of personnel on scene. This is our time to evaluate actual MCI video footage. Later in the day we participate in a table top exercise that gives us an opportunity to practice each of the roles we were randomly assigned. (I received Transportation Group Supervisor, for those of you that have done or will do this exercise.)
In the afternoon comes all the fun! This year we ran our scenario, from first Engine dispatched to scene cleared in approximately an hour and a half. I believe we only lost around 8 patients (now while in EMS we try to save everyone) in an MCI, which by definition is any incident that over whelms your resources, our goal is to provide the most good for the most people. I think we accomplished that. I’m uploading pictures today and I am working on getting a copy of the video evaluation taken during the scenario to upload later. Enjoy.

Amber … that’s really exciting, giving us an inside look into MCI training. Well, I actually learned what MCI meant! Was there an ample amount of adrenaline? How do you stay calm, even while training?
Thanks for sharing this with us.
